Abstract:
A coastal vulnerability index (CVI) was used to map the relative vulnerability of the coast to future sea-level rise within Point Reyes National Seashore in California. The CVI ranks the following in terms of their physical contribution to sea-level rise-related coastal change: geomorphology, regional coastal slope, rate of relative sea-level rise, historical shoreline change rates, mean tidal range and mean significant wave height. The rankings for each input variable were combined and an index value calculated for 1-minute grid cells covering the park. The CVI highlights those regions where the physical effects of sea-level rise might be the greatest. This approach combines the coastal system's susceptibility to change with its natural ability to adapt to changing environmental conditions, yielding a quantitative, although relative, measure of the park's natural vulnerability to the effects of sea-level rise. The CVI and the data contained within this dataset provide an objective technique for evaluation and long-term planning by scientists and park managers.
Purpose:
This shapefile contains geologic, physical process, and coastal vulnerability information for Point Reyes National Seashore collected by a number of organizations, and compiled by the U.S. Geological Survey, Woods Hole Science Center. This dataset allows the user to view variables that affect coastal vulnerability in a Geographic Information System.

The attributes in this dataset are based on A Coastal Hazards Database for the U.S. Gulf Coast (Gornitz, V. and White, T. W. 1992. ORNL/CDIAC-60, NDP-043B. Oak Ridge National Laboratory, Oak Ridge, Tennessee) updated with data from more recent sources. The data has gone through a series of QA/QC procedures, and is therefore believed to accurately reflect the data gathered in the Coastal Vulnerability to Sea-Level Rise Study.

The CaSIL's Digital Vector Shoreline was imported into ArcGIS then the shoreline was divided into 1 minute segments so that a field for each shoreline variable (geomorphology, rate of shoreline change, regional coastal slope, rate of relative sea-level rise, mean significant wave height, mean tidal range, and coastal vulnerability index) could be created, defined and associated with each shoreline segment.

Edits to the metadata were made to fix any errors that MP v 2.9.32 flagged. This is necessary to enable the metadata to be successfully harvested for various data catalogs. In some cases, this meant adding text "Information unavailable" or "Information unavailable from original metadata" for those required fields that were left blank. Other minor edits were probably performed (title, publisher, publication place, etc.). A bad link to a project page was removed. The source information was incomplete and had to be modified to meet the standard. Other miscellaneous bad links in the source information were either removed or edited. Minor fixes to the attribute format for some attributes were needed. The metadata date (but not the metadata creator) was edited to reflect the date of these changes. The metadata available from a harvester may supersede metadata bundled within a download file. Compare the metadata dates to determine which metadata file is most recent.
