Abstract:
A coastal change potential index (CPI) was used to map the relative vulnerability of the coast to future lake-level change within Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore in Indiana. The CPI ranks the following in terms of their physical contribution to lake-level change-related coastal change: geomorphology, regional coastal slope, rate of relative lake-level change, historical shoreline change rates, mean annual ice cover and mean significant wave height. The rankings for each input variable were combined and an index value calculated for 1-minute grid cells covering the park. The CPI highlights those regions where the physical effects of lake-level rise might be the greatest. This approach combines the coastal system's susceptibility to change with its natural ability to adapt to changing environmental conditions, yielding a quantitative, although relative, measure of the park's natural succeptibility to the effects of lake-level change. The CPI and the data contained within this dataset provide an objective technique for evaluation and long-term planning by scientists and park managers.
Purpose:
This shapefile contains geologic, physical process, and coastal change potential information for Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore collected by a number of organizations, and compiled by the U.S. Geological Survey, Woods Hole Science Center. This dataset allows the user to view variables that affect coastal change potential in a Geographic Information System.

The data has gone through a series of QA/QC procedures, and is therefore believed to accurately reflect the data gathered in the Coastal Change Potential to lake level changes study

The NOAA medim resolution digital vector shoreline was imported into ArcGIS then the shoreline was divided into 1 minute segments so that a field for each shoreline variable (geomorphology, rate of shoreline change, regional coastal slope, rate of lake level change, mean significant wave height, mean tidal range, and coastal change potential index) could be created, defined and associated with each shoreline segment.

Edits to the metadata were made to fix any errors that MP v 2.9.32 flagged. This is necessary to enable the metadata to be successfully harvested for various data catalogs. In some cases, this meant adding text "Information unavailable" or "Information unavailable from original metadata" for those required fields that were left blank. Other minor edits were probably performed (title, publisher, publication place, etc.). A bad link to a project page was removed. The larger work citation title had to be fixed. Two of the cross-references had bad online links that were fixed. The source information was incomplete and had to be modified to meet the standard. Other miscellaneous bad links in the source information were either removed or edited. Minor fixes to the attribute format for some attributes were needed. The metadata date (but not the metadata creator) was edited to reflect the date of these changes. The metadata available from a harvester may supersede metadata bundled within a download file. Compare the metadata dates to determine which metadata file is most recent.
