The USGS Cape Cod, Massachusetts Internet Map Server contains published data layers and information from various research initiatives conducted by the U.S. Geological Survey, Coastal and Marine Geology Program (CMGP). An example of the default map view is shown at the right. This map view shows the Cape Cod and Islands region and eastern Massachusetts to the New Hampshire border. The "Upper Cape" region shows the boundaries of the Massachusetts Military Reservation (MMR) and location of bedrock cores collected from western Cape Cod as part of the Installation Restoration Program (IRP). The Massachusetts Bay region shows a composite multibeam backscatter mosaic acquired during several surveys between 1994 - 1998 with sidescan sonar mosaics of Boston Harbor and the Nahant-Gloucester region. The eastern outer area of Cape Cod shows the backscatter imagery acquired in 1998. Additional data layers for the outer Cape Cod region include: 1- assessment of the coastal vulnerability for the Cape Cod National Seashore; 2- geologic interpretations derived from the 1998 backscatter imagery; 3- acquired surficial sediment samples and bottom photographs acquired as part of a ground-truth portion of the project to verify the backscatter imagery. Additional data layers include, the geologic interpretation of the region, coastal vulnerability assessment, town boundaries, village locations, and major roads.
Data layers may be "turned-off or on" by selecting the visible button beside the layer name. The map view will automatically update. A complete description of the available data layers may be found in the GIS Data Catalog.
