Abstract:
Marine seismic reflection data are used to image and map sedimentary and structural features of the seafloor and subsurface. These data are useful in mapping stratigraphy and in assessing other submarine geologic characteristics and features. The data presented here are useful in mapping sand deposits that may be used in Louisiana beach nourishment projects. These data were collected as part of a Louisiana Sand Resources Study done in cooperation between the USGS, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, University of New Orleans, Louisiana Department of Natural Resources, and Eckerd College. This study is part of the USGS Subsidence and Coastal Change (SCC) Project.
Purpose:
To aid in registering of boomer seismic reflection data collected during USGS Cruise 00SCC04.

Because the script that created this shapefile did not permit the trackline names to contain letters, all lines were renamed prior to running the script so that only the final numerical digits remained. For example, line "b00_51" became line "51." Furthermore, any letters needed to identify a particular section of a track were replaced with numbers. A's were replaced with "01" and b's with "02." For example, line "b00_67a" became line "6701."

Positional accuracy was determined with a Trimble Centurian P-Code GPS receiver, whose accuracy is within 100 m. The navigation data used to create this shapefile have not been corrected to reflect the 20-m offset between the shotpoint and the GPS antenna.

Process_Description:
As seismic reflection data were acquired, the position of the vessel was continuously determined by a GPS receiver and recorded by a seismic acquisition system from which navigation data for each individual line were later extracted and saved as ASCII text files. These files were edited to remove spurious data values and fix incorrectly recorded dates. They were also reformatted for use by a script which produced a generate file containing only latitude and longitude fixes for all 00SCC04 boomer shotpoints. In ArcView 3.2, this generate file was run through a second script which produced a shapefile in which individual shotpoints were connected to form lines. This shapefile was then reprojected from WGS84 to NAD83 using the ArcView Projection Utility (ArcView 3.2).
